Cervical Collars

Cervical collar is a medical-wear which is used in different types of neck injuries. In short words, the cervical collar is a neck brace which is used to keep the vertebras of the neck straight so that it can heal from the injury as soon as possible.

There are various kinds of these collars available in the market. Some of these collars are used in minor injuries while on the other hand other types are used in major injuries and after some major operation. The basic purpose of using these collars is to keep the neck in a neutral position so that it can create cure in the minimum possible time.

There are different shapes and designs in these cervical collars. Some of these are for major injuries and they are used after some serious surgical treatments. These types of collars are called hard cervical collars. A hard cervical collar is rigid and keeps the neck in its original natural position so that its vertebras can become straight and the healing process will be sped up.

Another type is the soft cervical collar, it is also a cervical collar which is used in injuries but it is used in minor injuries. It is not used in major injuries as the hard cervical collar is used. There are other types of these cervical collars available as well. The soft cervical collar is basically a foam cervical collar which is used after the minor injuries for example it can be used for whiplash etc.

Sometimes it happens that for a particular injury which a person may get, a proper cervical collar is not available and those collars which are available for the treatment are not able to fix in the neck of the patient properly in this case custom moulded cervical collar is used, that is designed for this purpose.

During your first aid training you should know how to use the cervical collars in emergencies for this purpose you can try it by asking for volunteers for cervical collar practice. And after practicing on them you’ll get the knowledge about their usage and how to use them correctly so that the patient’s neck will not be opened to the further injury and it’ll start creating recovery.

For treatment of child injuries and surgeries pediatric cervical collar is also available and sometimes it is recommended that the infant or the child should use it so that he can become healthy.

Some cervical collars are fixed and they don’t allow the patient to move the neck while in some other types it allows the person to move its neck here and up to a certain limit which is not dangerous for the neck. This type of collar is called adjustable cervical collar and if someone doesn’t have major injury doctor can advice him to use the adjustable cervical support collar so that he can feel comfortable and the immobilization of the neck will not cause boredom for the person.

There are many manufacturers of cervical collars which produce different types of cervical collars both hard and soft cervical collars. Some of these collars are very famous for example aspen cervical collar, halo cervical collar and sam splint cervical collar. are just few names from these famous types and these types are available and generally available in the market. Some of these collars have deviated from the traditional design and they are used in some major injuries because they also cover body with the neck for example halo cervical collar is one of such types.
