History Of First Aid

From the beginning of known history we know that men is concerned about getting knowledge about himself. The first aid history is old and we find it in prehistoric time as well. The demons used to make holes in the skull for treatment of mentally ill people. But at that time it was mostly a barbaric style of treatment. With the passage of time various developments have been made in this field. And different experiments were carried out to learn more about effective medical treatments.

But we can’t declare all of them as the history of first aid because of the fact that many Greek physicians had developed various procedures and medicines which they had used to treat patients and emergency victims. They have to develop such cure because of the warfare which existed in ancient times. It is also clear from researches that those Greek physicians and other scientist who were working in the field of medicine had developed some procedure to stop bleeding and they had also found some way to treat the fractures of bones.

Later on many developments have been made by Muslim scientist and they also developed several surgical instrument one of the Muslim physician at that time also mentioned the circulation of blood. Muslim physicians also wrote many books on anatomy and some were taught in Europe until the 17th century. The major development during Muslim dynasty was the development of several surgical instruments which were useful in emergencies and in treating different types of wounds. With that Muslim scientist also progressed in herbal medicine and they improved many herbal medicine which were used by Greeks.

The proper history of first aid developed very later so the course of history related to first aid, which we can say the history first aid started to develop in 18th century. It was developed and came into existence gradually because as the Muslim scientist were working in the east; similarly Knights who were used to fight in the battles need people to get immediate medical treatment. So they hired many people who can provide necessary medical treatment to the wounded soldiers. So they also developed such an organization which will help the wounded soldiers.

But the actual development of first aid was not made until the first Geneva Convention when Red Cross society was developed to provide aid to sick and ill soldiers in the war field. Later on an army surgeon gave the idea of trained civilian who can give emergency medical treatment to the wounded. It was called “pre-medical treatment” and the original term of first aid appear late in 1878 in Britain. That’s the history of first aid which is known to us. But in fact, the first aid history is very complicated and tough to explain in such a short article because of the different aspects which falls under the category of first aid treatments. For example, CPR, arm slings, fractures treatments, bleeding, applying bandages, etc.

The first aid treatment which we can find even in older times and which is still used in our era is the drowning first aid history in which the same procedures are applied to the drowning person, which were used in previous ages.
